The only options under Silence in the DND feature (whether it is on or not) is to either always silence call/notifications or only when the phone is locked. From the main window in Messages, put your finger on that conversation and pull to the left. If one conversation is showing the crescent moon, you may have silenced alerts for that conversation. One message was showing a crescent moon icon, but again, the DND setting is off (I've never used it). Notification for texts is on, and I did change the notification tone.
